If you are new to gambling, the choice of products can be confusing. This guide explains the six main types of gambling, how each one works in broad terms, and what they have in common. The rules differ between Great Britain (and the rest of the United Kingdom), the United States, Ireland, Canada and Australia, so we flag the key differences throughout and summarise them below. Minimum ages range from 18 to 21 depending on where you are.
You bet on the outcome of a sporting event, such as a football match, a horse race or a tennis tournament. The bookmaker offers odds, which show what you win if the bet is successful. The odds also contain a built-in margin for the bookmaker, which is how betting firms make money. Our guide to how sports betting works explains odds, stakes and margins in detail.
These include roulette, blackjack, baccarat and similar table games, played online or in a licensed casino. Every game has a mathematical advantage for the casino called the house edge. Over many bets, the casino expects to keep a small percentage of everything staked. See how casino games work and our look at roulette and blackjack odds.
Slot machines, online or in venues, are games of pure chance where a random number generator decides each spin. Each slot has a published return to player (RTP) and a volatility level. They are explained in slots explained.
Poker differs from most gambling because you play against other people, not against the house, and decisions affect results over time. The venue or site takes a fee, called the rake. Beginners should read poker for beginners.
Bingo is played with numbered tickets or cards, with prizes shared among winners. Lotteries, including the National Lottery, sell tickets for a draw where odds of the top prize are extremely long. See bingo and lotteries explained.
Despite their differences, every regulated gambling product shares three features.
Always check that an operator is licensed for the place where you are physically located.
Decide a budget before you play, treat it as the cost of entertainment, and never gamble money you need for bills or rent. Our free spend tracker lets you set a weekly or monthly limit and warns you as you approach it. Everything stays in your browser.
Gambling covers six main types, from sports betting to lotteries, and the law differs by country and even by state or province. They all work on the same principle: the odds are set so the operator expects to profit across many bets, and results from wheels, slots and draws have no memory. Only use licensed operators, set a limit before you start and treat any money spent as the price of entertainment, not a way to make money.
