“Bet £10, get £30 in free bets.” “Deposit £20, play with £50.” Headlines like these are what get a welcome offer noticed — but they’re only half the story. The number in the headline and the amount you can actually use are rarely the same thing, and the gap between them is almost always explained by wagering requirements, buried in the small print most people never read.
This is the guide we wished existed before we started comparing offers properly: what wagering requirements actually mean, how free bets and no-deposit bonuses really pay out, and how to work out what a bonus is genuinely worth before you sign up anywhere.
A wagering requirement (sometimes called a “playthrough” or “rollover” requirement) is the number of times you have to bet the bonus amount — and sometimes your own deposit too — before any winnings from it can be withdrawn as real cash. It’s usually written as a multiplier, like “35x,” next to the offer.
So if you get a £50 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement, you need to place £1,750 worth of qualifying bets before you can withdraw anything you’ve won using that bonus. Two things catch people out here:
This is exactly why we show wagering requirements alongside the headline offer on every bonus listing rather than leaving you to dig for them — the number that matters is the one after “wagering requirement,” not the one in bold at the top of the banner.
These three terms get used loosely, but they work quite differently in practice:
None of this means bonuses aren’t worth having — a well-understood offer with reasonable terms is genuinely good value. It just means the headline figure is a starting point for comparison, not the number to plan around.
Every offer on our Bonuses page lists the wagering requirement and key terms next to the headline offer itself, and every operator we list holds a real, checked UK Gambling Commission licence — see our guide to what a UK licence actually guarantees for more on that side of things.
