A welcome bonus is an offer made to a new customer, usually when they sign up or make a first deposit. The offers look similar in adverts, but they are built in four quite different ways. This guide explains each structure for readers in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia, because the rules and even the availability of bonuses differ a great deal between those places.
A bonus is marketing. It is designed to bring in new customers, and it always comes with conditions. Nothing here is a recommendation to claim one. For the wider picture, read how bonuses actually work.
The operator adds bonus funds equal to a share of your deposit, for example 100% up to a set limit. The key condition is wagering: you must stake a multiple of some amount before bonus funds, and often winnings from them, can be withdrawn.
Here is a worked example for illustration only. You deposit 50 and receive a 50 bonus with a requirement of 10 times the bonus. You must wager 10 x 50 = 500 before the bonus funds become withdrawable. Some terms apply the multiple to deposit plus bonus instead, which would be 10 x 100 = 1,000. That is 20 times the bonus, so it would not fit the current Great Britain cap of 10 times the bonus. It could appear only in another market or as a historical example, so always read which base is used. At an assumed average cost of 4% for play, wagering 500 costs about 20 on average. That is an average over many players, not a forecast, and a single player can finish well above or below it.
Common in sports betting, a free bet is a stake credit. In many terms the stake itself is not returned, so you only receive the profit if the bet wins.
For illustration, take a free bet of 20 placed at decimal odds of 3.00. If it wins, you receive 40 in winnings. A cash bet of 20 at the same odds would pay back 60 (40 profit plus your 20 stake). If it loses, you lose nothing from your balance, but the credit is gone. Free bets often need a qualifying cash bet first, may have minimum odds, and usually expire. See how sports betting works.
You receive a set number of spins on named slots at a fixed value per spin. Winnings may be paid as cash or as bonus funds with their own wagering, and some terms cap how much can be withdrawn. Full detail is in free spins explained.
You receive a share of net losses back over a set period, as cash or bonus funds. It softens a bad run but does not remove it, because you still need to lose first. Details are in cashback offers explained.
Rules are not the same everywhere, but the same concerns recur.
Deposit matches, free bets, free spins and cashback are four ways of packaging a promotion, and each carries conditions that reduce its real value. None is free money, and none changes the house edge. Decide your budget first, read the terms in full and track what you spend with the spend tracker. If you ever feel pressure to chase a bonus, read about self-exclusion.
