How Sports Betting Works: Odds, Stakes, Markets and the Bookmaker’s Margin

Learn how betting odds work, how to read them, how to convert them to probabilities and why every bookmaker builds a margin into the prices.

Sports betting looks simple: pick a winner and collect if you are right. Underneath, the prices bookmakers offer follow clear rules. Understanding them helps you see what a bet is really worth. The maths is the same in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia, although the odds format and the laws differ.

Stakes, odds and returns

Your stake is the amount you bet. The odds tell you what you can win. In the UK, odds are usually shown as fractions, such as 5/1, or as decimals, such as 6.00.

  • Fractional odds show profit relative to the stake. At 5/1, a £10 stake wins £50 profit, so you get back £60 including your stake.
  • Decimal odds show total return per £1. At 6.00, £10 returns £60.
  • Evens (1/1 or 2.00) means you double your stake.
  • American odds (common in the US and Canada) use a plus or minus sign. +500 means a $100 stake wins $500 profit. -200 means you must stake $200 to win $100 profit.

A short price such as 1/4 (1.25) means the outcome is considered likely and pays little. A long price such as 20/1 (21.00) means it is considered unlikely and pays a lot.

Turning odds into probability

Odds imply a probability. Divide 1 by the decimal odds. (For American odds, +500 equals decimal 6.00, and -200 equals decimal 1.50.) At 4.00, the implied probability is 1 divided by 4, which is 25%. At 2.00 it is 50%, and at 1.25 it is 80%.

Here is where the bookmaker’s margin appears. Take a football match with these decimal prices: home win 2.10, draw 3.40, away win 3.60. The implied probabilities are 47.6%, 29.4% and 27.8%. Add them up and you get about 104.8%. A fair market adds to 100%. The extra 4.8% is the bookmaker’s margin, sometimes called the overround. It means that, on average, bettors collect less than they stake.

Common markets

  • Match result (1X2): home win, draw or away win.
  • Over/under goals: whether total goals are above or below a line.
  • Both teams to score: yes or no.
  • Outright: who wins a league or tournament.
  • Handicap: a head start is given to one side to even things out.
  • In-play: betting while the event is under way, with odds that move constantly.

Each market has its own margin. Markets with many outcomes, such as outright winners, usually carry bigger margins than a simple two-way line.

Cash out and free bets

Many bookmakers offer cash out, letting you settle a bet early for an offered amount, which becomes fixed only once you accept it and it is confirmed. The offer can be higher or lower than your original stake, and it can change or disappear before you accept. The cash-out price includes a margin too, so taking it repeatedly usually costs value. Free bets typically return only the winnings, not the stake. Read how bonuses actually work before claiming any offer.

Why “value” is not the same as “likely”

A bet has value only if the true chance of winning is higher than the odds imply. Finding that consistently is very hard, because bookmakers employ analysts and adjust prices quickly. For most customers, the margin means long-run losses. Combining several selections into one bet makes the effect worse, which is why accumulators are riskier than they look.

Rules by country

  • Great Britain: bookmakers need a UK Gambling Commission licence to serve customers in Great Britain; the minimum age is 18.
  • United States: sportsbooks are licensed by individual states, mainly for customers aged 21 or over, and you must be physically inside a state where betting is legal.
  • Ireland: licensed bookmakers are being brought under the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland; the minimum age is 18.
  • Canada: single-event sports betting has been legal since 2021. Provinces run the market; Ontario’s regulated online market is overseen by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario. The age is 19 in most provinces.
  • Australia: only licensed Australian wagering providers may take bets, and credit cards cannot be used for licensed online wagering.

Staying in control

Set a stake limit before the match starts, and avoid betting to win back a loss. Use the deposit limits and time-outs that licensed operators must provide. You can track your spending with our free spend tracker.

A worked example

For illustration, with invented prices, suppose a bookmaker prices a tennis match at 1.80 for Player A and 2.00 for Player B. The implied probabilities are 55.6% and 50%, which add to 105.6%. The extra 5.6% is the margin. Now suppose £1 is staked on each player, £2 in total. If Player A wins, the return is £1.80, or 90p for every pound staked. If Player B wins, the return is £2.00, or 100p for every pound staked. If both players are truly 50-50, the average return is £1.90 on £2, or 95p per pound staked. That 5p gap is the bookmaker’s average margin, though the actual result on any one match depends on who wins.

Questions to ask before you bet

  • What is my maximum loss on this bet, and can I afford it?
  • Am I betting because I have an opinion, or because I want action?
  • Have I already reached my limit for the week?
  • Does the market have unusually high margins, such as a multi-outcome outright or a novelty bet?

Taking a minute to answer these questions removes most impulse bets.

The bottom line

Sports betting odds show both the payout and an implied probability, and bookmakers add a margin so the prices total more than 100%. That margin is why most bettors lose over time. Learn to read odds, convert them to probabilities and only stake what you can afford to lose. Use bookmakers licensed for your country or state and the safer gambling tools they must offer.
