Types of Welcome Bonus Explained

Deposit matches, free bets, free spins and cashback are built differently. Learn how each is structured, what the terms mean and how rules differ by country.

A welcome bonus is an offer made to a new customer, usually when they sign up or make a first deposit. The offers look similar in adverts, but they are built in four quite different ways. This guide explains each structure for readers in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia, because the rules and even the availability of bonuses differ a great deal between those places.

A bonus is marketing. It is designed to bring in new customers, and it always comes with conditions. Nothing here is a recommendation to claim one. For the wider picture, read how bonuses actually work.

Deposit match

The operator adds bonus funds equal to a share of your deposit, for example 100% up to a set limit. The key condition is wagering: you must stake a multiple of some amount before bonus funds, and often winnings from them, can be withdrawn.

Here is a worked example for illustration only. You deposit 50 and receive a 50 bonus with a requirement of 10 times the bonus. You must wager 10 x 50 = 500 before the bonus funds become withdrawable. Some terms apply the multiple to deposit plus bonus instead, which would be 10 x 100 = 1,000. That is 20 times the bonus, so it would not fit the current Great Britain cap of 10 times the bonus. It could appear only in another market or as a historical example, so always read which base is used. At an assumed average cost of 4% for play, wagering 500 costs about 20 on average. That is an average over many players, not a forecast, and a single player can finish well above or below it.

Free bet

Common in sports betting, a free bet is a stake credit. In many terms the stake itself is not returned, so you only receive the profit if the bet wins.

For illustration, take a free bet of 20 placed at decimal odds of 3.00. If it wins, you receive 40 in winnings. A cash bet of 20 at the same odds would pay back 60 (40 profit plus your 20 stake). If it loses, you lose nothing from your balance, but the credit is gone. Free bets often need a qualifying cash bet first, may have minimum odds, and usually expire. See how sports betting works.

Free spins

You receive a set number of spins on named slots at a fixed value per spin. Winnings may be paid as cash or as bonus funds with their own wagering, and some terms cap how much can be withdrawn. Full detail is in free spins explained.

Cashback

You receive a share of net losses back over a set period, as cash or bonus funds. It softens a bad run but does not remove it, because you still need to lose first. Details are in cashback offers explained.

What the regulators say

Rules are not the same everywhere, but the same concerns recur.

  • Clear terms: the Gambling Commission requires incentive terms to be clear, transparent and fair, and easy to find. Advertising rules treat deposit, wagering and withdrawal requirements as significant conditions that must be shown prominently.
  • Bonus funds are separate: following action by the Competition and Markets Authority, UK operators agreed that players should be able to withdraw their own deposit and the winnings from it without playing it through several times over. Wagering attaches to the bonus portion.
  • A cap on wagering: Gambling Commission licensees in Great Britain may not set wagering requirements above 10 times the bonus value, in force from 19 January 2026. They also may not mix product types (betting, casino, bingo, lottery) in a single incentive.
  • Fair treatment after you start: guidance says operators should not change a free bet’s terms once you have started using it.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: the points above apply to Gambling Commission licensees in Great Britain. Bonuses remain available, within these limits, to adults aged 18 and over.
  • United States: regulation is state by state. Online casino bonuses exist only where online casinos are legal, in a handful of states, and sports betting offers where it is legal. In New Jersey, for example, online casino operators must file promotion terms with the regulator before launch. Other states have their own rules.
  • Ireland: licensing under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 is being rolled out by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, betting first. Check that an operator holds an Irish licence before trusting any offer.
  • Canada: provinces regulate. In Ontario, public advertising of bonuses is prohibited, but under AGCO Standard 2.05 offers can be communicated on the operator’s own gaming site and through direct advertising or marketing to players who have actively consented. All material conditions must be shown when an offer first appears. An offer cannot be called free if you must risk your own money to get it.
  • Australia: licensed wagering operators may not offer inducements to open an account, so sign-up bonuses for new accounts are not permitted in the way they are elsewhere. Online casino games and pokies are prohibited for people in Australia.

How to compare structures safely

  • Ask what you must spend first: a deposit or qualifying bet is your own money at risk.
  • Find the multiple and its base: is it the bonus, or deposit plus bonus?
  • Check the clock: many bonuses expire within days, which can push people to play faster than planned.
  • Read the limits: maximum bet while a bonus is active, game restrictions and withdrawal caps. See max bet rules in bonus terms.

The bottom line

Deposit matches, free bets, free spins and cashback are four ways of packaging a promotion, and each carries conditions that reduce its real value. None is free money, and none changes the house edge. Decide your budget first, read the terms in full and track what you spend with the spend tracker. If you ever feel pressure to chase a bonus, read about self-exclusion.
