Max Bet Rules in Bonus Terms Explained

Why bonus terms cap your stake size, how breaking a max bet rule can void winnings, a worked example, and how to check the limit before you accept an offer.

Among the conditions attached to a bonus, the maximum bet rule is one of the easiest to miss and one of the most costly to break. It limits how much you may stake on a single spin, hand or bet while bonus funds are active. This guide explains why the rule exists, how it can lead to winnings being removed, and how to check it, with notes for readers in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

The rule is part of the terms you accept with an offer, and it often sits far from the headline. Related reading: types of welcome bonus explained.

Why operators set a maximum bet

A bonus comes with a wagering requirement, and the operator carries some risk that a player clears it quickly with a few lucky bets. A stake ceiling spreads the play across many bets, which reduces how much luck can matter.

Here is a worked example, for illustration. Suppose a bonus of 50 has a 10 times requirement, so 500 must be wagered.

  • Maximum bet of 5: at least 500 / 5 = 100 bets are needed. That spreads the outcome across more results, though even 100 bets can land far from the long-run average, especially on a high-volatility game.
  • No limit, staking 100 per bet: 500 could be wagered in 5 bets, and the outcome would depend mostly on a handful of results.

For the operator, the first case is more predictable, but it is still not certain. The ceiling does not change the house edge on any bet.

How the rule is written

Wording differs, so look for these details.

  • What it limits: per spin, per bet, per round or per hand.
  • How it is measured: a fixed amount, or in some terms a share of the bonus.
  • When it applies: usually while bonus funds are in your balance or wagering is incomplete.
  • Special features: read whether extras such as purchasable bonus rounds or side bets count toward the limit.

How breaking it can cost you

The usual consequence is that the operator may void winnings, remove the bonus or both. Where the breach is found after a big win, the sums can be large.

A well-documented example, from June 2025, comes from Ontario. The regulator, AGCO, penalised an operator over a welcome bonus of up to 2,000 dollars. To receive the full bonus, a player had to deposit 2,000 and wager 70,000, which is 35 times the deposit, within seven days, with each bet capped at 5. AGCO said the average player would lose around 3,640 before earning the bonus. The investigation began after a player complained that more than 8,500 in winnings had been kept. All these figures are in Canadian dollars. AGCO said the terms encouraged risky play and that some conditions were hard to find. The operator could appeal.

That case shows why the rule matters. A low cap, a high multiple and a short deadline together can make the offer very hard to complete without heavy losses.

What regulators say

The Gambling Commission, which regulates Great Britain, expects terms to be fair and transparent. Its guidance on fair terms lists a promotion term that lets an operator void real-money winnings after an inadvertent breach of staking rules as a potentially unfair practice. Its consumer advice says bonus restrictions, including limits on bet size, should be clearly explained. The Competition and Markets Authority has said that restrictions on how you can play must be made clear, and operators cannot rely on vague wording to confiscate money. In Ontario, all material conditions must be disclosed when an offer is first presented.

How to check before you accept

  • Find the number: search the terms for “maximum bet”, “max stake” or “bet limit”.
  • Check the scope: does it apply to all games, or just slots? Does it cover the whole balance?
  • Do the sum: divide the total wagering by the cap to see the minimum number of bets.
  • Save the terms: take a screenshot of the terms on the day you claim.
  • Check what the game remembers: some games keep your last stake and some autoplay features can carry a stake above the cap, so see how the limit is applied.
  • Ask support: if anything is unclear, get the answer in writing before you play.

If winnings are removed and you disagree, follow the operator’s complaints process first. See how complaints and disputes work.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: in Great Britain, Gambling Commission licensees must offer clear, transparent and fair terms, and wagering on bonus funds is capped at 10 times the bonus (from 19 January 2026). Complaints go first to the operator, then to an approved dispute service.
  • United States: regulation is state by state. In New Jersey, for example, online casino operators must file promotion terms with the regulator before launch. Other states have their own approaches.
  • Ireland: licensing under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 is being rolled out by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, betting first. Online casino licensing has not yet opened.
  • Canada: provinces regulate. In Ontario, AGCO standards require disclosure of material conditions and bar promotions that cannot reasonably be completed without substantial losses. Age is 19 in most provinces, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
  • Australia: online casino games are prohibited for people in Australia. Terms on licensed wagering products vary by operator and by state or territory regulator.

The bottom line

A maximum bet rule is a small line in the terms that can decide whether winnings are paid. It exists to control the operator’s risk, not to protect you, and breaking it by accident can still cost you. Read it before you accept an offer and divide the wagering by the cap to see how many bets the offer implies. If a bonus makes you gamble in a way you would not otherwise choose, decline it.
