What a UK Gambling Commission licence actually guarantees, how GAMSTOP/BeGambleAware/GamCare differ, and how to spot an unlicensed site before you sign up.
“UK licensed and regulated” appears on almost every gambling site’s homepage. It’s easy to skim past — but a genuine UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) licence is the single most useful piece of information you can check before signing up anywhere, and it’s worth knowing exactly what it does and doesn’t guarantee.
The UKGC is the statutory regulator for gambling in Great Britain. An operator holding a current UKGC licence has to meet ongoing requirements around, among other things:
A licence being active doesn’t mean gambling with that operator is risk-free — gambling always carries risk, that’s the nature of it. What it means is there’s a real regulator you can complain to, minimum standards the operator has to meet, and a licence that can genuinely be suspended or revoked for serious breaches. That’s a meaningfully different starting point from an unlicensed offshore site with none of those obligations.
Every operator listed on our Casinos and Sports Betting pages holds a licence we’ve checked ourselves against the public register, not just a badge the operator displays. Licences do occasionally lapse or change, which is why we re-check listings regularly rather than treating a licence as a one-time tick-box when a brand is first added.
You can run the same check yourself in under a minute on the UKGC’s public register (gamblingcommission.gov.uk) — search the operator’s name and confirm the licence status is “active,” not “lapsed,” “revoked” or missing entirely.
These three names show up on nearly every UK gambling site’s footer, including ours, and they do different jobs:
None of these require you to have “hit rock bottom” first — they’re free to use at any stage, including if you just want to set firmer limits for yourself.
UK-licensed operators are increasingly required to run financial risk checks on customers showing signs of higher-risk spending patterns — this can mean an operator asking for evidence of income or source of funds before allowing continued play at certain loss thresholds. It can feel intrusive if you haven’t encountered it before, but it’s a regulatory requirement designed to catch problem gambling earlier, not a sign anything’s wrong with your account. It’s also one more reason an unlicensed site — which has no obligation to run these checks at all — isn’t the “hassle-free” alternative it might look like.
If in doubt, the UKGC’s public register takes the guesswork out of it entirely — it’s the same check we run before any operator appears on this site.
