Free Spins Explained: Value, Wagering and Limits

How to work out what free spins are really worth, and how spin value, game limits, win caps and wagering on winnings change what you can withdraw.

Free spins are one of the most common promotions in online casinos. They give you a set number of spins on a chosen slot, paid for by the operator rather than from your balance. The headline number looks generous, but it tells you very little without the spin value and the terms around any winnings. This guide explains how to read them, with notes for readers in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

Free spins are marketing, and the word “free” describes only the stake. Whether you can withdraw what they win depends on conditions set by the operator.

Start with the spin value

Every free spin has a fixed stake, set by the operator. A bigger number of spins does not mean a bigger offer. Multiply the number of spins by the value of each one to get the total stake you are being given.

For illustration, 50 spins at 0.10 each is a total stake of 5. One hundred spins at 0.05 each is also 5. The second sounds twice as good and is not. Spin value is usually shown in the terms rather than the headline, so look for it.

What the spins are played on

Free spins are normally limited to one named slot, or a short list. This matters for three reasons.

  • Return to player: each slot has its own published RTP, and the operator picks the game. You cannot choose a game that suits you. See RTP, house edge and payout rate.
  • Volatility: a high-volatility game pays rarely and sometimes in large amounts, so many spins return nothing. Read how to read a game’s rules and paytable.
  • Features: bonus rounds triggered during free spins usually run on the same fixed stake.

Wagering on winnings

What happens to the winnings is the most important term. There are two common set-ups.

  • Paid as bonus funds: winnings are credited as bonus money with a wagering requirement, and sometimes a cap on what can be withdrawn.
  • Paid as cash: winnings can be withdrawn at once, or after a short check. This is the most favourable arrangement and is often described as “wagering free”, but you should confirm in the terms.

In Great Britain, wagering attached to bonus funds is capped at 10 times the bonus value by the Gambling Commission. Check whether spin winnings are classed as cash or bonus funds, because that decides which rules apply.

A worked example, for illustration

These numbers are invented to show the arithmetic and do not describe a real offer. Suppose you receive 50 spins at 0.10 on a slot with a published RTP of 96%.

  • Total stake given: 50 x 0.10 = 5.
  • Expected winnings on average: 5 x 0.96 = 4.80.
  • If winnings are bonus funds with a 10 times requirement: 4.80 x 10 = 48 to wager.
  • At an assumed average cost of 4% on the games used, wagering 48 costs about 1.92 on average.
  • Simple balance after turnover: 4.80 – 1.92 = about 2.88.

Treat 2.88 as a rough turnover calculation, not as the expected amount you could withdraw. It assumes the full 48 is wagered with no interruption. In practice the balance may run out first, the bonus may expire, some funding or games may not count, and a withdrawal cap may apply. Working out the true expected withdrawable value needs a model of when play stops, which this sum does not have. The true result varies enormously. Most players on a volatile slot win very little from 50 spins, and a few win much more. A win cap, for example a limit of 20 on withdrawals from bonus winnings, would remove anything above that amount. The figures are small, a reminder that free spins are a modest promotion, not a route to profit.

Other limits to look for

  • Expiry: spins and winnings often expire within days. A short deadline can push people to play faster than they planned.
  • Maximum bet: once winnings become bonus funds, a cap on stake size may apply. Breaking it can void winnings. See max bet rules in bonus terms.
  • Deposit needed: many offers require a first deposit, or a qualifying bet, to unlock the spins. That makes them a deposit offer in practice.
  • Game contribution: wagering may count differently across games. See game contribution tables explained.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: in Great Britain, Gambling Commission licensees may offer free spins to adults aged 18 and over, within the 10 times cap and the rule against mixing product types in one incentive. Terms must be clear and easy to find.
  • United States: free spins on real-money games exist only where online casinos are legal, in a handful of states, and each state sets its own promotion rules. Sweepstakes and virtual-coin sites are a separate grey area; see sweepstakes casinos explained.
  • Ireland: online casino licensing under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 has not yet opened. Free spin offers from sites claiming Irish regulation deserve extra care.
  • Canada: provinces regulate. In Ontario, bonus offers cannot be advertised publicly and must disclose every material condition when first shown. Age is 19 in most provinces, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
  • Australia: online casino games, including online pokies, are prohibited for people in Australia, so lawful free spins offers for Australians do not exist. Offers from offshore sites are outside Australian consumer protections.

The bottom line

Free spins have a real but small value that depends on the stake per spin, the game, the way winnings are paid and any cap or wagering requirement. The number in the advert matters less than the terms. They do not change the house edge, and a promotion that makes you play more than you meant to has cost you something. Set a limit before you spin, and use the spend tracker to check your spending. For how this fits with other offers, see how bonuses actually work.
