Betting Exchanges Explained: Back, Lay and Commission

How betting exchanges differ from bookmakers, what backing and laying mean, how liability and commission work in numbers, and where exchanges are available.

A betting exchange is a platform where customers bet against each other instead of against a bookmaker. The exchange matches the two sides and charges a fee. This guide explains backing and laying, how liability and commission work, and how availability differs across the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

It is educational only. It does not suggest events to bet on, and exchange betting can lose money just as bookmaker betting can. In some ways the risks are higher, because laying exposes you to larger losses than your stake.

Bookmaker versus exchange

With a bookmaker, you accept the prices they set, and they take the other side of your bet. On an exchange, customers post the prices they want. The exchange only sets the rules, matches bets and takes commission.

Prices come from the crowd. The amount available at a given price is called liquidity. A busy market has lots of money at close prices. A quiet market may have little, and bets may go unmatched or only partly matched.

Backing and laying

  • Back: bet that something will happen. This is the same as a normal bet. You win if it happens and lose your stake if it does not.
  • Lay: bet that something will not happen. You act like a bookmaker. If it does not happen, you win the other customer’s stake. If it does, you pay them.

Prices on an exchange are usually shown in decimal odds, where 4.0 means a 25% implied probability. You can see the best available back price and the best available lay price, and a small gap between them is normal.

Liability: the number that matters when laying

When you lay, your risk is called your liability. It is the backer’s potential profit, and you must have it in your account before the bet is matched.

Liability = lay stake x (decimal odds – 1)

Suppose you lay 10 pounds at decimal odds of 4.0:

  • If the selection loses, you win the backer’s 10 pound stake.
  • If the selection wins, you pay out 10 x (4.0 – 1) = 30 pounds. Your liability is 30.

The danger rises sharply at long odds. A 10 pound lay at 21.0 has a liability of 10 x 20 = 200 pounds, twenty times the potential win. This asymmetry is why laying is not a low-risk way to bet.

Commission

Exchanges charge commission on net winnings in a market. They do not charge when you lose. Betfair’s help pages describe the calculation as net winnings x the market base rate x (100% minus a discount rate), with the base rate depending on the country where you live. Each exchange sets its own rates and they change, so check the live page for yours.

Here is an example using a made-up flat rate of 5%:

  • Back 10 pounds at 4.0 and win. Profit is 30, commission is 1.50, and you keep 28.50.
  • Lay 10 pounds at 4.0 and win. Profit is 10, commission is 0.50, and you keep 9.50.
  • If you win 30 on one selection and lose 10 on another in the same market, your net winnings are 20, so commission is charged on 20, not on 30.

Commission is a real cost, and it reduces the return of every winning market. Prices on a busy market may be closer together than a bookmaker’s built-in margin, but thin markets can be worse. Neither is always cheaper. See how sports betting works for how bookmaker margins are built in.

Other points to know

  • In-play moves fast. Exchange prices can change second by second.
  • Unmatched bets. An order waits in the queue until someone takes the other side, and may never be fully matched.
  • Market rules still apply. Non-runners, dead heats and void rules differ from market to market, and a rule such as a reduction for non-runners can change the return.
  • Restrictions. Exchanges can restrict or close accounts for reasons like fraud or breaches of terms. See account restrictions and stake limits.
  • Matched betting. The back-and-lay structure is used in matched betting, which has its own risks and tax questions.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: exchanges are licensed by the Gambling Commission like other operators. The minimum age is 18, and GAMSTOP covers licensed online operators.
  • United States: betting is regulated state by state, with ages mostly 21. Traditional back-and-lay exchanges are not widely available, so check your state regulator and be careful with any site claiming otherwise.
  • Ireland: betting licensing is being rolled out by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Check the regulator’s register to see what a given operator is licensed to offer.
  • Canada: provinces regulate betting. Ontario’s standards for sport and event betting explicitly cover betting exchange products. The age is 19 in Ontario and most provinces, 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
  • Australia: exchange operators can be licensed in some jurisdictions, and the Northern Territory regulator handles complaints about bookmakers and betting exchange operators. Online casino games and pokies are prohibited for people in Australia. BetStop is the national self-exclusion register.

Staying in control

Laying can produce losses far larger than the stake, and fast in-play markets make this easy to miss. Work out your liability before you place any lay bet and treat it as the amount you could lose. Track every result with the spend tracker. If you are chasing losses, self-exclusion is available.

The bottom line

An exchange swaps the bookmaker’s margin for commission on net winnings and lets you back or lay. Laying carries liability that can far exceed your stake, thin markets can have poor prices, and nothing about the format makes winning more likely. Understand liability and commission before you place a bet, and only risk money you can afford to lose.
