How to Spot Unlicensed Gambling Sites and Scams in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia

Red flags that a gambling site is unlicensed or a scam, where to check a licence in each country, and what to do if you have been caught out.

Unlicensed gambling sites look much like licensed ones, with polished designs, big bonuses and quick sign-up. The difference appears when you try to withdraw or have a dispute. This guide explains how to check a site, the main red flags, and where to find official registers in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

Why licensing matters

A licensed operator must follow rules on identity checks, fair games, handling of customer funds, advertising and safer gambling tools, and a regulator can fine or revoke its licence. On an unlicensed site none of that applies. You may have no way to recover your balance, and self-exclusion schemes will not cover you. See the UK Gambling Act and the Gambling Commission for how licensing works in Great Britain.

Rules by country

  • Great Britain: search the operator or domain on the Gambling Commission’s public register. Operators serving Great Britain must hold a UK licence, and the register shows licence status and trading names.
  • United States: gambling is licensed by each state. Check the state gaming regulator’s list of licensed operators for the state where you are located, and remember you must be physically inside a state where the product is legal.
  • Ontario, Canada: the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario publish lists of registered operators. Other provinces have their own regulators and government-run sites, and the picture is changing, so check the provincial regulator.
  • Australia: only licensed Australian wagering providers may offer online betting, and the Australian Communications and Media Authority keeps a register of licensed services and asks internet providers to block illegal ones. Online casino games and pokies are prohibited for people in Australia, so any site offering them to you is illegal by definition.
  • Ireland: the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland is rolling out licensing, starting with betting. Check its register for current licence holders, and note that online casino licensing is not yet open.

Do not rely on a logo in the footer. Search the register yourself and check that the company name, domain and licence number all match.

Red flags

  • No licence number, or one that does not match the register.
  • A licence from a place that does not cover your country. An offshore licence gives no local protection, and the site may not be allowed to accept you. See why offshore licences are risky.
  • Bonuses that seem too good to be true, such as huge matches or promised profits. Some licensed operators do run genuine no-wagering offers, so judge the conditions, the licence and the pressure to act, not one feature alone.
  • No age or identity checks before you can deposit or play.
  • No safer gambling tools, such as deposit limits or self-exclusion, and no mention of GAMSTOP or BetStop where they apply.
  • Unclear company details: no registered company, no address or one that does not exist.
  • Odd payment demands: crypto only, gift cards, or a bank transfer to a personal account. See crypto gambling risks and payment methods and withdrawals.
  • Pressure tactics, such as countdown timers, calls from “account managers” or requests to deposit more to release winnings.
  • Poor reviews about withdrawals on independent sites.

Common scams

  • Clone sites that copy a real operator’s branding.
  • Fake withdrawal fees, where the site demands payment before releasing your winnings.
  • Betting “tipsters” and “systems” that promise steady profits for a fee.
  • Social media giveaways and messages offering free credit in exchange for deposits.
  • Phishing emails and texts pretending to be from your operator.
  • Fake prize notices. See lottery scams explained.

A worked example of a fake fee

For illustration, a site shows a balance of £2,000 after a short run of wins. When you ask to withdraw, it says a “tax and verification fee” of £300 must be paid first, by crypto or gift card. After you pay, it asks for a further £500 for “insurance”. The pattern never ends, because the balance was never real. A licensed operator may disclose fees or statutory withholding that come out of a payout, but it does not ask you to send extra money before it releases your balance, and it does identity checks without charging for them. If a site asks you to pay in to unlock money, treat it as a scam.

What to do if you have been scammed

Stop depositing. Keep screenshots, receipts and chat logs. Contact your bank or card provider promptly, since some transactions can be disputed. Report the site to the relevant gambling regulator, and report the fraud to the national service:

  • United Kingdom: Report Fraud (which replaced Action Fraud in December 2025) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or Police Scotland on 101.
  • United States: the Federal Trade Commission and your state attorney general or gaming regulator.
  • Canada: the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and the AGCO if the operator claims to be registered in Ontario.
  • Australia: Scamwatch, run by the ACCC, and the ACMA for illegal gambling sites.
  • Ireland: An Garda Siochana for fraud, and the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland for licence concerns.

If gambling is causing you distress, free helplines are listed below. A legitimate dispute with a licensed operator follows a different route, covered in how complaints and disputes work.

Check before you deposit

  • Search the regulator’s register for the company and domain.
  • Read the terms on withdrawals and bonuses.
  • Look for independent reviews, not just ones on the site itself.
  • If the licence, company details or terms cannot be verified independently, do not deposit. Testing a site with money is not a safe way to check it.

The bottom line

Always check a gambling site’s licence on the official regulator register for your country before you deposit. Beware of oversized bonuses, missing safer gambling tools, unclear company details and unusual payment demands. If something feels wrong, stop, keep records and contact your bank and the regulator.
