MLB Betting Guide: Moneylines, Run Lines and Totals

How baseball moneylines, run lines, totals and pitcher conditions work, why MLB odds look different from other sports, and how rain and extra innings affect bets.

Baseball is played almost every day for six months, so MLB betting offers a constant stream of markets. This guide explains moneylines, run lines and totals, why starting pitchers matter so much to prices, and how rain delays and extra innings affect settlement. It is written for adults in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada and Australia, and it is educational only.

It does not recommend teams or bets, and no market makes winning likely. A margin is built into every price, and the daily rhythm of baseball makes it easy to bet far more often than you planned.

Why baseball odds look different

A Major League season is 162 games per team, and even the strongest teams lose a large share of them. Scoring is low and chance plays a big part, so most games are closer to a contest between two fairly even sides than in sports like basketball. That is why moneyline prices are often fairly close together, and why a short price still leaves a real chance of losing.

Prices also change often. A single injury, lineup change or weather report can move a line during the day.

The moneyline

The moneyline is a bet on who wins the game. American odds use a minus sign for favourites and a plus sign for underdogs. Here is a worked example of how to convert them.

  • Favourite at -140: 140 divided by 240 is 58.33%.
  • Underdog at +120: 100 divided by 220 is 45.45%.
  • Total: 103.79%. The extra 3.79 points are the sportsbook’s margin.

The odds formats guide shows how to convert between American, decimal and fractional odds. The margin is paid on every bet.

The run line

The run line is baseball’s version of a point spread. It is almost always set at 1.5 runs. The favourite is -1.5, so it must win by two or more runs to cover. The underdog is +1.5, so it covers by winning or by losing by exactly one run.

Because many baseball games are decided by a single run, the run line has a different price from the moneyline. A favourite at -140 on the moneyline is typically offered at a longer price on -1.5, because winning by two or more is harder than winning at all. The run line is a way to take a different price, not a way to improve your chances. Handicap betting explained covers the general idea.

Totals

A total is a bet on the combined runs of both teams. A line of 8.5 means nine or more runs win the over, and eight or fewer win the under. Baseball totals often adjust the price on each side rather than the line, for example over 8.5 at -115 and under 8.5 at -105. Wind, temperature and ballpark can influence run scoring, and sportsbooks consider them, so a weather shift can move a total.

Starting pitchers and listed-pitcher rules

The starting pitcher has a large effect on a single game’s price because one player is involved in every play. Sportsbooks normally list the expected starters. Many offer a choice when you bet: “listed pitchers” or “action”. With a listed-pitcher bet, if either named starter does not start, the bet is typically void and the stake is returned. With an action bet, the bet usually stands whoever pitches, and many sportsbooks keep the price you took even though it was set for the original pitcher. That is operator-dependent, however: some operators may reprice or restrict action bets after a pitcher change, and the choice may not be offered on every market. The exact house rules shown on the bet slip are the only safe guide. The choice matters more in baseball than in most sports because a last-minute pitcher change can change the true price a great deal.

Rain, shortened games and extra innings

Baseball can be delayed or called off by weather. A bet usually stands if a delayed game resumes the same day, and is typically void if the game is postponed before it starts. Rules for shortened games differ: a moneyline often becomes official after five innings, while run lines and totals commonly require a full nine innings (or about eight and a half if the home team leads) and are otherwise void. Treat that as a general pattern rather than a fixed rule, and read your operator’s wording.

In the regular season, extra innings begin with an automatic runner on second base. MLB made this permanent from the 2023 season, and it does not apply in the postseason. It changes how extra innings play out, which matters for live bets and totals. Spending speed is the practical risk here, because one nine-inning game offers many in-play markets. A limit set in advance and a record kept in the spend tracker help show the real total.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: MLB betting is offered by operators licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain. You must be 18 or over, and GAMSTOP covers most licensed online operators in Great Britain.
  • United States: Regulation is state by state. Sports betting is legal in most states, with the minimum age 21 in most places and 18 in some. Winnings are taxable income at federal level.
  • Ireland: Betting regulation is moving to the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 regime. The minimum age is 18, and there is no national self-exclusion register yet.
  • Canada: Single-event sports betting has been legal since August 2021, and provinces set the rules. The age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
  • Australia: Licensed bookmakers can offer baseball wagering to adults aged 18 and over. BetStop is the national self-exclusion register, and credit cards are banned for licensed online wagering.

The bottom line

MLB betting depends heavily on the rules: listed-pitcher conditions, run line prices, rain rules and extra-innings settlement all change what a bet is worth. None of them removes the sportsbook’s margin, and the daily schedule means costs can build quietly. Set a budget, take regular breaks and use self-exclusion if control slips.
