Basketball produces a lot of scoring and a lot of games, so NBA betting moves fast and covers many markets. This guide explains spreads, totals, moneylines and player props, and how the sport’s scoring and schedule affect prices. It is written for adults in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada and Australia, and it is educational only.
It does not recommend teams or players, and no market makes winning likely. Every price carries a margin, so over time most people who bet lose money.
An NBA game has four 12-minute quarters, with five-minute overtime periods if the score is level. Teams score on most possessions, and a basket is worth two or three points. Because there are so many scoring events, the better team usually wins more often than in low-scoring sports, and point spreads can be large. Each basket is also worth a smaller share of the final margin, so one made shot rarely decides a bet unless the line is tight.
The regular season is 82 games per team, and the league also has a play-in tournament for teams seeded seven to ten in each conference. With so many games, no single result carries the weight it does in a short season.
The spread gives the favourite a points handicap. If Team A is -6.5 at -110, Team A must win by seven or more for a bet on them to win. A bet on Team B at +6.5 wins if Team B wins or loses by six or fewer.
Take two results. If Team A wins 108-101, the margin is seven and the Team A bet wins. If Team A wins 107-101, the margin is six and the Team A bet loses even though the team won the game.
At -110 you stake 110 to win 100, so the break-even rate is 110 divided by 210, which is 52.38%. Anyone betting on spreads needs to be right more often than that just to cover the margin.
The moneyline is a bet on who wins outright. A strong favourite can be priced at a very short price, such as -600, which means you must stake 600 to win 100. The implied probability is 600 divided by 700, which is 85.71%. The reverse price on the underdog is much larger, but the total of both sides still exceeds 100%, which is the margin. The odds formats guide explains conversions.
A total, or over/under, is a bet on the combined points of both teams. With a line of 220.5, a game finishing 112-107 has 219 points, so the under wins. Totals normally include overtime. Late in a game, a team that is behind fouls deliberately, which stops the clock and can add points. This is one reason late-game totals and spread outcomes can change quickly.
Props are bets on individual performance, such as points, rebounds or assists. If the line for a player is 24.5 points and the player scores 25, the over wins. If the player scores 24, the under wins. Props are generally priced with a larger margin than spreads and totals, and limits are often lower. Prop bets explained covers how they are priced.
Settlement rules matter. At many sportsbooks a player prop stands once the player takes the court, however long they play, and is voided if the player does not play at all. Terms differ between operators, particularly when a player is injured early, so read the rules of the site you use.
A back-to-back is when a team plays on two consecutive nights. Teams sometimes rest key players, particularly on the second night, and lineups can be confirmed close to the start of play. Prices move when injury news arrives, and the market usually reflects the schedule already. A rested or tired team does not decide the result in advance, and no schedule pattern removes the margin from the price.
Basketball lines are updated almost constantly. Runs of scoring can swing a live line in minutes, and short quarters make it easy to place many bets during one game. The cost is in the repetition, because each bet carries the margin again. Decide a limit before the tip-off and track the total with the spend tracker.
NBA markets are easy to place and hard to profit from. High scoring, big spreads, player props and constant in-play updates mean the margin is paid many times over during a season. Know how a bet settles if a player sits out, set a budget before each game and consider the self-exclusion options if you feel betting is taking over.
