VIP Schemes and Loyalty Programmes: Benefits and Risks

How VIP tiers, points and personal account managers work, why regulators worry about them, and a safer way to treat any invitation to join one.

Many gambling sites run loyalty or VIP programmes. Players earn points or move up tiers as they stake more, and top tiers can bring perks such as a personal account manager, special offers or gifts. This guide covers how these schemes work and where the risks sit, for adults in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

The key point is that a VIP scheme is a marketing tool. It rewards activity, and the operator pays for it out of the money it expects to keep through the house edge. Nothing in a scheme changes your chances on any game.

How loyalty points and tiers work

Most programmes follow the same pattern. You earn points based on money staked, not on money won. Points convert into bonus credit, free spins, cash back or prizes. As your points rise, you move through named tiers, often bronze, silver, gold and similar labels.

Tiers usually come with more perks. These can include faster withdrawals, higher limits, tailored offers, event invitations or a named contact. Some programmes require you to keep a certain level of activity to hold your tier. That is where pressure can build.

What the rewards are really worth

Here is a worked example. The numbers are for illustration only and are not taken from any real operator.

Suppose a scheme gives 1 point for every £10 staked, and 100 points convert to £1. Staking £1,000 earns 100 points, which is worth £1. That is a reward of 0.1% of turnover.

Now suppose the game has an illustrative house edge of 4%. Expected loss on £1,000 of play is £40 (£1,000 x 0.04). The £1 reward covers 2.5% of that expected loss (£1 / £40). The player is still expected to be £39 down on average, so the reward is small compared with the cost of the play that earned it. For the wider picture of how operators earn their margin, see how bookmakers and casinos make money.

Higher tiers may pay a larger percentage, but the same logic holds. A rebate is only ever a fraction of the expected loss.

The risks of VIP-style schemes

  • Spending to keep status. If a tier needs a minimum monthly stake, the scheme can nudge you to gamble more than you planned.
  • Personal contact. A friendly account manager can make it harder to say no, especially when offers arrive at moments of losses or boredom.
  • Gifts and hospitality. Tickets and presents can create a feeling of obligation or belonging.
  • Targeting people who are already spending a lot. High spend is not the same as high income, and heavy gambling is linked with greater risk of harm.
  • Raised limits. Higher deposit or bet limits can accelerate losses.

What regulators have said

In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission has been critical of how some operators treated high-value customers. It has said these schemes have been repeatedly linked to harm, with customers encouraged to spend beyond what they could afford, often with no checks on whether they could. In its 2020 consultation response it said operators that cannot apply effective controls, including due diligence, senior oversight and clear accountability, should not run such schemes. It then set out guidance and a licence code provision on offering incentives to high-value, VIP or equivalent customers.

Elsewhere, rules sit with each regulator. In Ontario, a registered operator must not offer a product or promotion that is not reasonably attainable without substantial losses. Offers may only be advertised through the operator’s own site or by direct marketing to people who have given active consent, and that consent can be withdrawn at any time.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: the Gambling Commission’s guidance applies to tailored or personalised incentives linked to high spend or frequent play. It does not cover general bonuses open to large numbers of customers.
  • United States: regulation is state by state, so loyalty and VIP rules vary. Check the state regulator and the operator’s terms.
  • Ireland: the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland is rolling out licensing, betting first. Check current rules and the operator’s own policies.
  • Canada: provinces regulate. In Ontario, the AGCO’s Standards limit how bonuses and inducements are advertised and require an opt-in for direct marketing.
  • Australia: online casino games and pokies are prohibited for people in Australia, so casino-style VIP schemes are not lawful online. Licensed wagering operators still run loyalty offers, and the 2026 reforms aim to restrict some inducements, with most provisions starting in 2027.

A safer approach

You are not obliged to accept an invitation to any scheme. If you do join, a few habits reduce the risk:

  • Decide your monthly budget first and keep it the same whatever your tier.
  • Treat points as a rounding error, not a reason to play.
  • Turn off marketing messages you did not ask for, or withdraw consent where the rules allow it.
  • Say no to a personal manager if you feel pressure, and keep communication in writing.
  • Never raise limits to keep a tier. Use a spend tracker to check what you have really spent.
  • If you notice that you play more to keep status, stop and think about taking a break or using self-exclusion.

For other kinds of repeat offers, see reload bonuses and loyalty offers explained. A budget set in advance also helps; see bankroll management for beginners.

The bottom line

VIP and loyalty schemes reward spending, and the reward is small compared with the expected cost of the play that earns it. Their main risks are pressure to maintain a tier, personal contact at vulnerable moments and larger limits. Regulators have repeatedly raised concerns, so treat any invitation with caution, keep your budget fixed, and walk away if a perk starts to influence how much or how often you gamble.
