Gambling Urges and Relapse Prevention

Practical ways to ride out urges to gamble, spot triggers, plan for slips and use support groups and tools, with country-specific options for five markets.

An urge to gamble can feel urgent and unstoppable. Urges can rise and fall, and there are practical tools and support that help many people get through them. This guide is for people in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Australia who want to cut down or stop, and for those supporting them.

It is general information, not treatment. If gambling is causing serious harm, speak to a doctor or a helpline as well. Nothing here suggests gambling is a way to make money.

What an urge is

An urge is a strong pull to gamble, often with a thought such as “just one bet” or “I will win it back”. It may come with a racing heart, restlessness or a sense that nothing else will do. Urges are normal in early recovery and can return months later.

Gambling support services often describe urges as something like a wave: they can build, peak and then fade. Experiences and duration vary from person to person, and finding an urge hard to manage is not a personal failure. The aim is not to feel no urge. It is to give it time to ease, with support, before acting.

Know your triggers

Triggers are the people, places, feelings and situations that set urges off. Common ones named by gambling support services include:

  • Payday or having cash available.
  • Boredom, loneliness or stress about money, work or relationships.
  • Gambling adverts and betting offers on TV, social media or by email.
  • Watching sport, or being near a venue.
  • Alcohol or drugs, which weaken self-control.

Keep a short trigger log for a few weeks. Note what happened, what you thought and felt, and what you did. Patterns usually appear quickly, such as late evenings or arguments.

Tools for the moment an urge hits

Gambling Help Online describes a set of techniques known as the 5Ds. In brief:

  • Delay. Wait before doing anything. Many services suggest at least 15 to 30 minutes, and then another stretch if the urge remains. Sources differ on the exact time, so choose a period you can manage.
  • Distract. Change what you are doing. Walk, shower, cook, tidy, call a friend or watch something absorbing.
  • Deep breathe. Slow breathing helps the body settle. In urge surfing, you keep breathing steadily and watch the sensation rise and fall instead of acting on it.
  • Decide. When your time is up, check in with yourself. If the urge has faded or feels manageable, carry on with your day. If it is still strong, go back to delay and distract. It also helps to keep your reasons for changing written in your phone.
  • Discuss. Tell someone you trust. Secrecy gives urges more power.

Make gambling harder

Willpower works better with barriers.

  • Block access. Use self-exclusion, blocking software and bank gambling blocks. The NHS suggests registering with GAMSTOP, installing a blocking app such as Gamban and asking your bank to block gambling payments.
  • Remove temptation. Delete gambling apps, unsubscribe from marketing and take saved cards off your devices.
  • Limit cash. Move spare money to savings, or ask the bank about arrangements it approves, chosen freely and with easy access to money for essentials.
  • Plan evenings and paydays. Schedule something else for risky times.

Planning for a slip

Slips are common. A lapse is a single episode, while a relapse is a return to old patterns, and the response in the first hours often decides which it becomes.

  • Stop as soon as you notice. Do not chase losses; see why chasing losses feels so powerful.
  • Tell your support person or helpline the same day.
  • Write down what triggered it, then change the plan.
  • Avoid shame spirals. A slip does not erase progress.

Warning signs of drifting back include skipping support meetings, feeling “cured”, gambling “only” on lottery tickets or fantasy bets, and hiding money. Treat these as cues to get support early.

Support that works alongside you

  • Gamblers Anonymous. A 12-step fellowship whose only membership requirement is a wish to stop gambling. Meetings can be in person, online or by phone.
  • SMART Recovery. A skills-based alternative that focuses on motivation, urge management, problem-solving and lifestyle balance.
  • Counselling. Talking therapies such as CBT help many people. See what counselling looks like.
  • Family and friends. A supportive person who checks in can make a real difference.

The cost side, for illustration

If someone used to spend 80 a week on gambling and stops, that is 80 x 52 = 4,160 a year that stays in their account. This is an illustrative figure, not a typical one. Track your own progress with the free spend tracker and decide in advance where the money goes, such as debts or savings.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: GAMSTOP is free for licensed online operators and lasts 6 months, 1 year or 5 years (the 5-year option can auto-renew where offered). It cannot be ended early, and lottery-only licences without instant-win games can fall outside it. The National Gambling Helpline (Great Britain) is 0808 8020 133.
  • United States: Self-exclusion is state by state and varies by operator. Call the National Problem Gambling Helpline on 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738); the older 1-800-522-4700 remains active.
  • Ireland: There is no national self-exclusion register live yet, so exclusion is operator by operator. Ask your GP or the HSE about support. Gamblers Anonymous meetings are listed in some local directories.
  • Canada: Provinces run their own self-exclusion and help programmes, for example ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600.
  • Australia: BetStop is the national register for licensed online wagering, with a minimum of 3 months up to lifetime. Gambling Help Online runs on 1800 858 858.

The bottom line

Urges can ease with time, and practical tools and support help many people manage them. Learn your triggers, use delay-and-distract tools, put barriers between yourself and gambling and plan for a slip before it happens. Support from a helpline, a group or a counsellor makes recovery more likely, and starting again after a setback is a normal part of changing a habit.
