Talking to Your Bank About Gambling

What banks can do to help with gambling spending, from card blocks to hardship teams, plus what to ask for and where the limits are in five countries.

Your bank sees every payment you make, which makes it one of the most practical places to put a barrier between you and your gambling. Many banks now offer tools that are free and take minutes to set up. This guide covers what is commonly available in the UK, the USA, Ireland, Canada and Australia.

It is general information, not financial advice. Features change often, so always confirm the details with your own bank. If gambling is already causing you distress, you can also read about blocking software and bank blocks and gambling debt help by country.

Why the bank is a useful ally

Gambling sites are designed to make paying easy. A bank control works at the other end: it stops the payment from leaving your account at all. That matters because urges often pass, but a deposit made in a rush cannot be undone. A block adds a pause between the urge and the transaction.

Banks also hold something valuable, which is a full record of what you have actually spent. Many people underestimate their totals because they remember wins more clearly than losses. Reading your statements honestly is often the first step.

Gambling blocks on cards

A gambling block is a setting that makes your bank decline card payments to merchants classed as gambling businesses. In the UK, the Gambling Commission points out that several major banks offer some version of this, with differences between them. Some blocks cover payments to gambling websites and apps. Some let you freeze particular transaction types. Others are managed through the app or a call to customer support.

The key difference is how quickly you can switch a block off. Some banks let you lift it instantly. Others, such as HSBC, apply a cool-off period during which payments keep being declined after you ask to lift it. In Ireland, PTSB has been reported to require 48 hours’ notice to remove its block. A delay is a feature, not a flaw. It gives a late-night urge time to fade.

Blocks are not perfect. Most work by the category code a merchant is registered under, so a business using a different code can slip through. They also do not stop cash withdrawals, bank transfers you make yourself, or payments to a friend who gambles for you. Treat a block as one layer of protection, alongside self-exclusion.

What to ask your bank for

You do not need to explain everything. A clear request is enough. Useful things to ask about include:

  • A gambling block on every debit and credit card you hold, and whether it covers your partner’s or joint accounts if you agree.
  • A delay on removal, so that lifting the block takes at least a day.
  • Lower limits on card spending, daily withdrawals and overdrafts.
  • Removal or reduction of overdraft and credit limits, if borrowing is part of the problem.
  • Alerts for large or repeated payments.
  • A separate account for bills and savings, with your spending money kept apart.
  • The hardship or financial support team, if you are behind on payments.

Hardship teams

Most banks and card providers have a team for customers who are struggling to repay. You do not usually need to mention gambling, though being open can help them understand your situation. Depending on the lender, they may offer a payment plan, reduced payments for a period, or a pause on some charges. Nothing is automatic, and each case is assessed individually, but contacting them early generally gives you more options than waiting until you are in arrears.

Ignoring letters and missed payments tends to make things harder. A free debt adviser can speak to lenders for you.

A quick spending review

Try this with the last three months of statements. The numbers below are for illustration only.

Suppose you find 14 gambling payments in a month, averaging 25 pounds each. That is 350 pounds a month, or 4,200 pounds a year (14 x 25 x 12). Many people are surprised by how fast small payments add up. If that figure is more than you planned, that is your cue to set a block and a budget. The spend tracker can help you log what you spend from now on and set limits.

Rules by country

  • United Kingdom: The Gambling Commission lists the bank blocks available and the National Gambling Helpline for support. Credit cards have been banned for gambling since April 2020, so a block mainly covers debit cards. Read more in credit card gambling bans by country.
  • United States: There is no single national scheme. Options vary by bank and card, and some issuers treat gambling payments differently from ordinary purchases. Call your bank and ask what controls exist. Some states also restrict credit card deposits at betting sites.
  • Ireland: Several banks, including Bank of Ireland and PTSB, have introduced voluntary gambling blocks, and the regulator has encouraged more to follow. Credit cards cannot be used to pay for gambling under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, which came into force in February 2026.
  • Canada: Policies depend on the bank and card. Some credit cards treat gambling payments as cash advances, which can mean fees and interest from day one. Ask your bank directly about blocks or limits.
  • Australia: Several big banks offer card gambling blocks, with some letting you choose the length. Credit cards and digital currency have been banned for licensed online wagering since June 2024. Remember BetStop as well.

The bottom line

A bank cannot stop you gambling, but it can make it harder to act on an impulse, and it can help if you are behind on payments. Ask about a gambling block with a delay on removal, lower limits and the hardship team. Combine these with a budget, self-exclusion and free support, and remember that no tool replaces a decision to stop when gambling stops being fun.
